Microsoft launched an unconventional update named KB5085516 for Windows 11 to address an issue hindering users from accessing Microsoft services following the March 2026 update. This bug affected various applications like Teams, OneDrive, Outlook, Word, and Copilot, but not all users may require this update.
A bug caused Windows to falsely indicate that you were not connected to the internet.
The error was unexpected and frustrating. Despite the internet working properly, the system displayed messages such as “internet connection required,” which hindered Microsoft account login on various applications. This issue prevented the utilization of essential functions like file syncing, cloud document access, and app login.
The latest update fixes this specific issue that Microsoft says was caused by a particular connectivity state triggered by the previous update (KB5079473).
With the patch in place, normal operation is restored, and apps can reconnect and log in without any issues.
Unlike standard updates, KB5085516 is not automatically installed and is considered an optional “out of band” update. You must go to Windows Update and manually install it, which is a quick process that only takes a few minutes to download and apply.
Do I have to install it or can I skip it?
Not everyone has to install the update if their computer is functioning properly without any login or connection problems with Microsoft services.
If you’re having difficulty accessing applications such as Teams, OneDrive, or Office, it is advisable to install the patch promptly.
The issue started following the KB5079473 update, which was launched on March 10. Despite introducing enhancements like File Explorer upgrades and an integrated internet speed test, it resulted in this issue for certain devices.
Microsoft claims that not all users have been impacted by the bug and its effects may vary based on specific network conditions.
