Old printers will not stop working on Windows from 2026, despite rumors claiming so. Microsoft will cease publishing new V3 and V4 printer drivers on Windows Update starting January 2026.
What actually varies starting from January 2026
Printers with existing V3 or V4 drivers will still function as usual, and Windows will still permit the installation of these drivers through alternative methods. The modification only impacts new drivers. Starting from January 15, 2026, Windows Update will no longer provide third-party V3 and V4 printer drivers for Windows 11 and later versions of Windows Server.
Old drivers that are already installed will still function, and V3 and V4 drivers available on Windows Update can still be downloaded. Manufacturers can also keep providing drivers through their own packages on their official website.
If your printer is currently functioning, it will not stop working due to a Windows update.
Why is this being done by Microsoft?
Microsoft previously announced its plan to discontinue updates for older devices, such as legacy printer drivers, starting in 2023. Windows 10 21H2 has been incorporating built-in support for Mopria-compatible printers.
These printers are equipped with all the necessary components for Windows to function in the “connected, worked” mode without requiring the installation of third-party drivers. Given Mopria’s establishment in 2014 and its widespread adoption by major brands like HP, Canon, and Epson, Microsoft has chosen to focus on this contemporary approach.
