Firefox will no longer be supported on Windows 7, 8, and 8.1.

Mozilla has announced the end of Firefox support for Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1, effective from the end of February 2026. Users on these older systems will no longer receive security updates or protection against new threats.

Firefox 115 is the most recent version that is compatible.

The most recent browser version that works with these operating systems is Firefox 115, which is provided through the Extended Support Release (ESR) channel specifically for continued support on older platforms.

This edition received security updates for a period of time following the end of Microsoft’s support for Windows 7. Mozilla originally intended to maintain Firefox 115 until 2024, but extended this deadline twice to accommodate users.

After February 2026, there will be no further browser updates for these systems due to the company’s decision that supporting outdated operating systems is costly, risky, and leaves users vulnerable to known security issues.

What should be done at this moment

The official advice is to switch to a more recent operating system like Windows 10 or 11. If the computer cannot run these newer Windows versions, Mozilla also recommends exploring Linux-based systems, which typically come with Firefox pre-installed and receive ongoing updates.

Firefox 115, which was launched in July 2023, was intended as a short-term fix during this transition period. Following multiple delays and additional years of support, the company ultimately chose to end this phase permanently.
